Google Quality Guidelines

How to Become Popular with Google

Following Google’s Quality Guidelines can mean the difference between finding your site organically ranking on the 1st page, or not. If not it can mean to a vast majority of website users that your site doesn’t even exist – eek! Obviously it’s very important to have a website which follows these guidelines as closely as possible, so as a ‘refresher course’ for the New Year, we have some handy tips to help you get in Google’s good-books.

Firstly, Google has a set of guidelines and principles which they recommend you should follow. These are made up of Basic Principles, Specific Guidelines and, Good Practices. For a thorough lowdown on these you can visit Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.

Tip # 1

Google doesn’t like spammy back links to your site. You can easily see which sites link to your site via Google Webmaster Tools under Search Traffic. If you detect any sites here which you don’t recognise as legitimate, you can compare them to the Google Quality Guidelines and remove any of the sites hurting your online reputation. Make it a monthly practice to ensure you’re up-to-date.

Tip # 2

If you think you’re smarter than Google, think again. Google spends a lot of time constantly tweaking, updating and improving their search algorithms, and if you try to sneakily trick them, they will catch you out, and you will have to deal with the consequences.

Tip # 3

When working on your site, your number one aim should be to provide the information your users need. Your user is numero uno! If you do this, Google will view your site as genuine. If you stuff your website with keyword rich text which isn’t built for the user and obviously for SEO purposes, this will not please Google, or your target audience! Instead, create informative, relevant content. Satisfying your target audience also means presenting your content in a user-friendly-way. Make it easy for your users. In providing your users what they want, you’ll become more popular with Google; winning!

Tip # 4

Don’t write your content yourself; hire an expert! Professional writers, in comparison with amateurs, will not only help to increase your brand reputation, but Google will notice as well. Proper, descriptive and, original content will stand out and be rewarded. Yes, anyone can write content, but if you want it done well, leave it to those who have spent the time refining their skills.

The above is a great starting point, but it skims the surface of the practices you need to be utilising to optimise your website, so make sure you put aside some time to properly go through Google’s Webmaster Guidelines.
