Online Shopping Trends

More and more people are now jumping online to make purchases, with almost 90% of Australian internet users now making online transactions. This is probably due to the fact that more and more households now have easy access to the internet. In 1998 only 1/8th of households had internet access, whereas in 2007, ¾ of households had internet access; this figure has been rising since.

Consumers aged between 25 and 30 use online shopping more than any other demographic, according to the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

So now is the best time to get your business online!

Online shopping itself has become a lot more popular these days. There are several motivators to take into consideration when trying to explain this trend:

  • · Users save time shopping online; convenience
  • · Users location is less relevant as they can shop world wide
  • · There is a wider variety of products available online
  • · Prices are generally cheaper; users can easily compare prices
  • · Specialty and hard to access products are more easily found
  • · Products and services are easily compared

These motivators should all be taken into consideration when taking your products/services online. If your product was directly pitched against your competitors, would you come out ahead? You want to make sure you do as independent research has found that roughly 83% of consumers perform comparison research online before buying a product/service.

Another noticed trend is that in 2011, about 25% of mobile internet users are shopping online from their mobile devices. Ebay has reported that an item is bought online, via a mobile, every 15 seconds! It is apparent now that the online economy is booming, with revenues in some online markets increasing by up to 40% in 2010.

In Australia, roughly 54% of internet consumers spent less than $1000 in the last 6 months, whereas 43% spent above $1000 (out of that 43%, a further 11% of consumers spent more than $5000 in the last 6 months).

Whatever form of online sales you want to participate in, you need to take a strategic approach. Consumers can now instantly make or break a companies’ reputation thanks to the ever increasing popularity of social media etc. So make sure that you give your user an easy, satisfying experience and your online sales will soar.
